2016.Episode 10~The Baptism of the Dead

BaptismOne of the more difficult passages in Scripture is I Corinthians 15:29 where Paul talks about the baptism of/for/over the dead. In this podcast I discuss the possible interpretative options.

  1. LOL. I haven’t yet listened, but every time I see this passage mentioned, I remember my Greek class in 1 Corinthians under Dr. S. Lewis Johnson. We were supposed to prepare exegetical commentaries on three passages in 1 Corinthians, and also a 10-minute sermon (we Anglicans would call it a homily) from the passages we exegeted. He (or, maybe, his teaching aide) assigned the passages.

The passages I was assigned? 1 Cor. 5:1-5 (the deliver the sinner to Satan passage), 1 Cor. 11:1-16 (the headcovering passage), and 1 Cor. 15:29-32 (baptizing for the dead, or whatever). I lodged a meek protest – one didn’t lodge any other kind with Dr. Johnson!. As expected, he (a Very Reformed Calvinist), smiled sweetly and told me that “it looks like your chances are challenging this semester.” I’m pretty sure he deliberately chose that word “chances” as his smile perceptibly widened as he said the word.
